A first date wants an easy exit. A date night wants the opposite: something you'd both stay out for, that gives you a new thing to talk about on the way home. After the fourth dinner in a row, most couples in Sydney are looking for the same thing, which is a plan that isn't just another table for two.
Every venue below is real and linked to its own site, and we checked each one this week. Programs change, so look at what's on before you go. If you're still at the first-date stage, our first date ideas are built for that instead.
Culture nights
Art After Hours at the Art Gallery of NSW
The gallery stays open late every Wednesday, with guided tours, talks, films, live music, a bar and dinner, and it's free and open to everyone. The gallery's site also lists 2-for-1 exhibition tickets after 5pm on Wednesdays, which turns a paid exhibition into a cheap one. artgallery.nsw.gov.au
A show at the Sydney Opera House
Locals forget it's a working venue. Beyond the opera there's contemporary music, dance, talks and theatre, and the guided tours run every day if you'd rather see inside before committing to a show. Pick something neither of you would choose alone. sydneyoperahouse.com
Belvoir St Theatre
One of Australia's best-known theatre companies, in the backstreets of Surry Hills. A play gives you a whole conversation for the walk to a bar afterwards, and Surry Hills has plenty of those within a few blocks. belvoir.com.au
Cinemas with a bar
Golden Age Cinema and Bar
A small cinema in Paramount House with its own bar, showing new releases alongside themed film series and the odd exclusive. Have a drink before, argue about the film after, without changing venue. ourgoldenage.com.au
Ritz Cinemas, Randwick
A classic neighbourhood cinema that still screens some films on 35mm. Randwick has plenty of places for dinner or a drink within a short walk, so it's a whole evening in one postcode. ritzcinemas.com.au
Something to laugh at
The Comedy Store
Sydney's long-running comedy club in the Entertainment Quarter, with new-material nights, showcases and headliners. When we checked, its listings included a cheap weeknight stand-up show with a drink included in the ticket. Laughing at the same thing is a reliable sign you're on the right date. comedystore.com.au
Do something together
A cooking class at Sydney Seafood School
Sydney Fish Market runs its own cooking school inside the new market building, and a class is the kind of date where you're side by side with a shared job, which takes all the pressure off talking. The market is open daily until 10pm, so you can stay for a drink on the water after. sydneyfishmarket.com.au
The Grounds of Alexandria
A former industrial site turned into gardens, a cafe and a bar. The Potting Shed is the pick, surrounded by greenery. Good for a long, slow weekend dinner that doesn't feel like a restaurant. thegrounds.com.au
Free and cheap date nights
- Art After Hours on a Wednesday costs nothing unless you buy a drink or an exhibition ticket.
- A night walk around the harbour: Circular Quay, the Opera House forecourt and the Botanic Garden edge are lit up and busy enough to feel lively. Finish at a bar in The Rocks.
- A ferry with no destination in mind: ride out to Manly or Watsons Bay after dark and come straight back. The city looks completely different from the water at night.
- Takeaway on the sand: grab dinner and eat it on the beach at Bondi, Manly or Balmoral as the light goes.
- A recreated first date: go back to wherever you first met and do it again, properly this time.
Picking the right one
- Mid-week beats Saturday. Venues are quieter, bookings are easier, and a Wednesday night out feels like a treat in a way a Saturday doesn't.
- Alternate who plans. Taking turns means you each get surprised, and you learn a lot about someone from what they choose.
- One booked thing, one loose thing. Book the show or the class, then let where you go afterwards be spontaneous.
- Stay in one area. Surry Hills, Randwick, Alexandria and The Rocks all let you walk from the main event to a drink. Crossing the city between them kills the mood.
Not a couple yet?
Then you need a different kind of night out. An Oh Hi speed dating evening is a hosted night in a reserved area of a Sydney pub: twelve women and twelve men in one age bracket, a short conversation with each, and the next morning only mutual matches hear anything. Plenty of date nights start with one. See the upcoming evenings, or if you'd rather try your luck at a bar, here are the best bars to meet singles in Sydney.
