A good first date has an easy exit and an easy extension. Dinner has neither: you're locked in for two courses whether it's going well or not. The best first dates in Sydney are things you can walk, ride or wander through, with a coffee or a drink at the end if you both want one.
These are all public places, most of them free. Check opening hours and ferry timetables before you go.
On the water
The Manly ferry at golden hour
The most Sydney thing you can do on a first date. Sit outside, watch the Heads open up, get chips on the Corso, and come back after dark when the city lights are on.
Watsons Bay and the walk to Hornby Lighthouse
Take the ferry, walk out along South Head to the red-and-white lighthouse, and stop for a drink on the way back. There's always something to talk about when the view keeps changing.
Cockatoo Island
Convict sites, old shipyards and a lot of space to wander. It feels like a small adventure, which takes the pressure off the conversation.
Walks with a view
Bondi to Coogee coastal walk
Classic for a reason. You walk side by side, which makes talking easier than sitting face to face. Bronte is a natural halfway point if you want an early exit or a swim.
Mrs Macquarie's Chair at sunrise or sunset
The view of the Opera House and the Bridge together. Walk through the Botanic Garden to get there and you have a whole date with no booking needed.
Spit Bridge to Manly
Better for a second date or a very confident first one. Quiet beaches along the way, and a ferry home from Manly.
Barangaroo Reserve
Short loop, great sunsets over the water, and plenty of places for a drink nearby if it's going well.
Gardens and quiet places
Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden
A hidden, hand-made garden below the artist's house, with paths, benches and harbour glimpses. Quiet enough to actually hear each other.
The Royal Botanic Garden
Pick a bench, bring a coffee, and you have the best seat in the city. Easy to make it longer by walking on to the Art Gallery.
Centennial Park
Hire bikes and do a lap, or bring a picnic. Moving around makes nerves disappear faster than sitting still.
Culture, for talking about afterwards
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Wander the two buildings and pick your favourite piece in each room. It's a ready-made conversation and you'll learn how each other thinks.
Museum of Contemporary Art
Contemporary art gives you plenty to agree or disagree about. The rooftop has one of the best views at the Quay.
State Library of NSW reading room
Not a talking date, but a beautiful ten-minute stop before coffee. Good if you both love books.
Markets and food that isn't a sit-down dinner
A Saturday market
Browse, try things, buy something small for each other. Low pressure, lots to point at.
Dumplings in Haymarket
Order too much and share. Eating with your hands is a great leveller.
A bakery crawl in Newtown or Surry Hills
Rate each one out of ten. Turns a coffee date into a game.
A few rules for any first date
- Pick somewhere you can leave politely after an hour.
- Meet in public and tell a friend where you'll be.
- Plan one thing, and let the second thing be spontaneous.
- Choose somewhere quiet enough to hear each other.
